Seasons & Hunt Districts
Maine Trophy Moose Guide Service

1. What districts does Maine Trophy Moose operate in?

Wildlife Management Districts 4, 8, & 9.

2. Which season is best, September or October?
The season that is best for you and your schedule.  If it doesn't matter, check the boxes for September and October.  If you are a BOW HUNTER, the September season will offer you a much better chance at a bull in peak rut.  Gun hunters will have much better long range visibility in October, but September will work just fine for them as well. Avoid November (see guy's blog).

3.  How should I fill out my WMD choices?

For September ONLY, as follows in this order:  4, 5, 11, 3, 2, 1, 6, & 19.  For October ONLY or September & October, as follows in this order:  9, 8, 4, 14, 7, 5, 6, 3, 10, & 11.  Your overall chance of getting into a WMD that Maine Trophy Moose covers is increased by going with the September & October selection.

4.  Why fill out all the WMD choices?

If you get into a WMD that we don't work in, it's permissible to swap that permit with someone, resident or non-resident, who has one in one of your top choices.  I can facilitate that.  Many selectees do get one of their top three (3) WMD choices at the time of the drawing though.

5.  Can I improve my chances by selecting certain WMDs?

Not really.  All non-resident applicants are put into one pool.  As the names are drawn, they are given a permit for the highest WMD of their choice that still has at least one unassigned permit.  That is, someone drawn early in the process will get his or her top WMD choice.  Everyone in the past that I know that has chosen WMDs 8, 4, and 9 as their top three choices, and then been drawn, has gotten one of those units.

6.  How is the trophy bull selection in WMD's 4, 8, & 9?

Excellent, in all three, especially the less hunted and more remote spots we hunt.

7.  What about lodging & lodge location?

Lodging is remote, but not far from the spots we hunt. Electricity is generated on site. Hot showers & flush toilets, too!  All food & lodging is included. Location can be a big factor, especially if you get mixed up with an outfit that has to drive for an hour merely to get to the boundary of your permit's district. Not to mention driving further to get to the interior areas with less hunting pressure, and then the return trip in the evening. That's not why you're coming to Maine to hunt moose.

8.  Why not try for a November permit?

You can if you want to, but the trophy quality in the November districts isn't really too hot. Please see my blog for more on this.
