There's not a whole lot of scouting to be done in the spring, but it does give me an excuse for being out in the woods, and to see how the moose survived the winter. I usually start in late April, a great time before the bugs, and before anything starts to green up. The lack of foliage is a big help as it makes trail cutting into hunt spots much easier. I've been seeing moose right along, and they've gone from their rather haggard and rubbed look of April and May to having a very primed up and healthy appearance to their coats. Yesterday I saw 12 moose, and five were bulls with developing antlers. Bulls and cows are in the spots I left them last last fall. I have a trail cam in one spot that was loaded with images of several cows. There's also one bull at that location that I've been seeing for a couple years now. Last fall his antlers were around 35", with some good palms developing. I expect he'll be a shooter in another year or two, as the antler genetics in this particular area are outstanding. My guides and I will be on the look out all summer, and start scouting again in earnest in early September.
