For 2009 I booked three hunters total, one for September and two for October. This is my policy.
September Season: Frank Noska, a bowhunter from Wasilla, Alaska hunted this past September with Guy and Travis as his guides. On October 27th, 2009 Frank e-mailed me with the following words of recommendation:
"After applying for a Maine moose tag for several years, I finally drew a tag. My bowhunt with Guy Randlett was everything I had hoped for. His knowledge of my hunting area was incredible. His preseason preparation, organization, scouting, equipment, calling abilities, effort, and overall hard work was second to none. He is just a pure gentleman and a pleasure to hunt with. Living in Alaska, I am around moose regularly and get to hunt them frequently. I learned things on this hunt that I can use in Alaska bowhunting moose for the rest of my life. If I ever get another Maine moose tag, Guy Randlett's phone will be ringing. Thank you Guy!"
I am humbled by Frank's words. He hunts with a bow only, and has been a bowhunter for over twenty years.Frank wanted not just a Pope & Young bull, but a Boone & Crockett record book bull! He didn't get one, but he came very close were it not for a last second bit of fickle air current, and I praise him for passing some nice bulls. The image above, which I took during a recent post hunting season scouting trip, is of the aforementioned bull that Frank almost nailed. This Booner bull will be top on my list for 2010.
October Season: Guy, Russ, and Gary guided 12 year old Ian Alred (top image below, and big image on "Home" page) and his dad Thayne in WMD 9 for the second season. Thayne had hunted with us two times previous as both a sub-permittee and a permittee. Ian has a great future, at whatever he chooses to do, what more can I say. When a calf moose stepped out into the trail in front of us, we instructed Ian to be ready in case there was a good bull following. After a few minutes, a cow moose followed. Russ thought it best to move the hunter up closer, which he did. After a few more minutes of waiting, and watching the cow & calf walk away, Russ gave a couple of bull grunts. That's all it took. A fine bull came out to see who was horning in on his date. With total cool, Ian made a fine killing shot on that 52 inch bull. I witnessed all this from about 100 yards back, and it was one of the highlights of my outdoors career. That bull was in his face, and alot of grown men would have been flustered by that. But Ian's dad had put Ian through rigorous practise with his Savage in the weeks prior to their hunt, and it showed. The next day Ian took his limit of ruffed grouse (4).
Another hunter, David Wilson (lower image), was guided by Travis in WMD 4 for this same week. On the second day, at the end of a grassy road, they came upon a bull that was laying down in the tall grass ahead of them. It stood up and started away. Upon glassing it, Travis recommended that David pass on this one. David had glassed it, and decided he wanted it. With his deep voice and distinct Southern accent, David declared; " Ah WANT it!". That was the phrase that was most imitated and repeated around camp for the next few days. David's bull measured 50 1/2 inches, and had a broken point near the lower side of it's right palm that would have added another three inches at least. Shortly after he shot the fine bull, there was one of those brief but blinding snow squalls that often occur, hence the snow covering in the photo. The bull has two good antlers, however the photographer cropped out the right one! David was a lot of fun to have aboard, and he also limited out on partridges after his moose tag was used.
